Udi’s Gluten Free Original Granola

Where I bought it: Whole Foods

How much: $5.99

Udi’s is probably the most authentic granola simply because they use actual oats. These oats are certified gluten free.

There is some controversy out there if oats are of concern for celiacs. Kinnikinnick chooses not to use oats in their products as explained here. From my circle of people with gluten intolerance (some celiac) it’s a mixed bag. Most seem to be ok with oats, but a couple are not. Be aware.

Back to the product at hand. Udi’s granola is great. It’s just a great classic granola. They throw in some dried fruit and it makes a good cereal. But, when compared to Trader Joe’s GF Granola I think it’s the lesser product. Trader Joe’s granola has a unique blend of whole ton of crap thrown in and that gives it such a great flavor. Hands down winner for breakfast cereal choice.

If you’re a die hard classic granola fan stick with Udi’s. If you’re looking for something a little different with lots of different flavors mixing together, go with Joe’s.

Gluten Free Breakfast Roundup

Breakfast, what to eat, what to eat, what to eat? Here are six great GF foods for you to try:

1. French Toast

I had missed this one the most. I love french toast and thankfully Udi’s bread is totally french toast-able.

2. Waffles

I’ve not always been the biggest fan of waffles. But, after going gluten free it became one of the breakfast treats that I missed. Slather up some of these Gluten Free Pantry waffles with some Nutella or maple syrup and you’re in waffle heaven.

3. Muffins

Udi’s again. Their muffins are pretty damn good. I hear they’re bringing out some double chocolate ones (stoked!). For now, I’m still happy with the Blueberry and Lemon ones.

4. Cereal

There are a bunch of options these days for GF cereal. Trader Joe’s GF Granola is a one of the best out so far. I’m also a big fan of Nature’s Path Organic Mesa Sunrise Cereal. It’s a pretty good more traditional flake based cereal. Good for fiber too. Mmm amaranth.

5. Donuts

I know I always seem to bring up donuts whenever I can but, dammit GF donuts are necessary for survival! Thank you Kinnikinnick for your GF donuts. I wish my local Whole Foods would carry the chocolate ones so I can try them. So far my favorite are cinnamon sugar ones.

6. … Beer

Ok stay with me here.. Breakfast of champions for sure. So you wake up with a pretty massive hangover. Gotta ease the pain with a breakfast beer ;) No choice. Luckily there’s GF beer to the rescue!

Comfort Food Roundup

When first going gluten free it can be overwhelming thinking of all those foods you grew up with that you now can’t have. This post is dedicated to some comfort foods that I like that are now possible sans gluten.

1. Mac and Cheese

Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Rice Pasta and Cheddar

This stuff has the taste, texture and great un-natural color like the original.

2. Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are just awesome. A perfect recreation of the flour based original.

Read on for all the details.

3. Blueberry Muffins

Udi’s Gluten Free Blueberry Muffins

The aroma from these warming in the oven brings me back to waking up as a kid to the smell of fresh baked muffins my mom used to make.

Read on for all the goodness.

4. Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Grilled Cheese Sandwich made with Udi’s Gluten Free Sandwich bread

Udi’s makes the first gluten free bread that I’ve tried that doesn’t suck. And thanks to that it makes great staples like this grilled cheese possible.

Thank you Udi’s Gluten Free Foods

Thanks to Udi’s this last weekend my sister and I could carbo load like champs for a 1/2 marathon by stuffing our faces with delicious gluten free pizza. So I think it’s fitting to dedicate a post to Udi’s and give an overview of their products that I’ve tried so far.

Udi’s has a good selection of top notch products including:

Blueberry Muffins                                                Pizza Crusts

                                Lemon Streusel Muffins

White Sandwich Bread                                  Whole Grain Sandwich Bread

(Both tied, current best gf bread on the market, IMO)

And because of that great bread I’ve been able to make:

Awesome GF French Toast               Epic GF Grilled Cheese Sandwich

A note on quality

So far I haven’t been disappointed by any of their offerings. They’ve been able to consistently work their magic to create gluten free products with the right taste and, most importantly, texture that really feel like the gluten-full versions.

Keep up the good work Udi’s!

PS. I hear their bagels are going nationwide… sweet!
